Holy Week at St Mary's

Holy week is at the very heart of the Christian faith and christians throughout the world will be celebrating it in a multitude of ways. Here at St Mary’s we will travel through the week seeking to understand our own lives in the light of this story. We will live in the bitter/sweet day of Palm Sunday; rest in the intimacy of Maundy Thursday, recognising both our closeness to Christ and our easy acts of betrayal; we will stand at the foot of Jesus’ cross on Good Friday and pause to remember the ways in which Christ is still being crucified today. We will wait in silence on holy Saturday, alongside all who wait and despair. Then finally on Easter Day, together we will celebrate our conviction that love is stronger than hate, hope stronger than fear and life stronger than death.

Palm Sunday

We begin our journey through Holy Week with a service in the New Church at 11am. We remember the euphoria of the crowd as Jesus entered the holy city, a welcome which, all too soon, turned to hostility and rejection. We consider the part we play in this story. This service will be live-streamed: https://www.facebook.com/stmarystokenewington/live/

‘Walking through Holy Week’: 2 - 5pm in the St Mary’s Centre. This is designed especially (but not exclusively) with children in mind. Drop in any time and walk through the stations, pausing to think about each aspect of Jesus’ journey.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Prayer at midday in the New Church

Traditional service of Compline at 9pm via Zoom

Meditation on Tuesday morning 10.30 - 11.30 via Zoom, and Wednesday evening 8.15 - 9.15 in the Centre (also via Zoom)

Please email [email protected] for Zoom joining codes.

Maundy Thursday

‘In the Shadows’: 7.30pm in the New Church.

Through poetry, prayer, image and music we recall the events of the night before Jesus died. The service ends in silence as we enter into the darkness and watch and wait with Christ.

This service will be live-streamed: https://www.facebook.com/stmarystokenewington/live/

Good Friday

‘Words from the Cross’: 12 - 3pm in the New Church.

We hear the words Jesus spoke in his dying and reflect on where such words connect with our own lives and the life of the world. A service with much silence and the chance to bring your own prayers to the foot of the cross.

Easter Day

Easter Vigil: 5.15am in the St Mary’s Centre. Please enter by the main Centre door (not the church). We hear words from scripture of our salvation history culminating in the triumph of resurrection.
